Just 7,000 years ago, bananas were more or less inedible to humans.

They were so fibrous that we couldn't digest them, and were pitted with hundreds of large black seeds.

We know this because such bananas still grow in the wild, in regions such as the Pacific islands of Papua New Guinea; in Assam, Nagaland and Meghalaya in India; and in northeastern Queensland in Australia.
