Assam cabinet approves SOPs for expulsion of illegal immigrants

The Assam cabinet on Tuesday approved standard operating procedures (SOPs) for the removal of illegal immigrants, with the new norms empowering district authorities to serve a 10-day notice to alleged “foreigners” to prove their Indian citizenship failing which they would be deported.
Chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma described the move as a “landmark decision”, which will “fast track action” against illegal immigrants.
Sarma said that decision on the SOPs were taken after a Constitution bench of the Supreme Court, in October 2024, upheld the validity of Section 6A of the Citizenship Act, 1955. The top court had also held that an earlier legislation,
