State Rice Millers Seek Ban on Hybrid Paddy Seeds Amid Losses

After suffering losses in the last marketing season due to the poor out-turn ratio (OTR) of paddy to rice, the Punjab Rice Millers Association has urged the state government to ban the sale of hybrid paddy seeds.
PATIALA:
The out-turn ratio of paddy to rice is the percentage of rice yield that is extracted from paddy after milling. The Food Corporation of India (FCI) mandates an OTR of 67% for millers.
The association has called for strict action against seed companies promoting and selling hybrid varieties in Punjab, warning that their continued use would have devastating consequences for farmers, millers and traders.
Raising concerns over the advance booking of hybrid seeds by dealers through 'arhtiyas' (commission agents), the association said that farmers would bear the brunt of this trend.
