New port to be a milestone in Kerala’s maritime history

TRIVANDRUM: Vizhinjam International Seaport, which Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate next week, is poised to firmly establish Kerala’s capital on the global maritime map.

Ten years ago, India’s largest commercial port operator, Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone (APSEZ), received a 40-year concession to build and operate the port.

The first phase is now operational, and it handles more than 800,000 twenty equivalent units (TEUs) of containers a month.

In February and March, Vizhinjam topped the list of cargo movements at ports on India’s south and west coasts.

Buoyed by the overwhelming reception from the shipping industry, the APSEZ has advanced the subsequent three phases by ten years to be completed by 2028.
