Kerala nuns held on conversion, human trafficking charges

Alleging role in religious conversion and human trafficking, Chhattisgarh police arrested two Catholic nuns from Kerala on Saturday.Sister Vandana Francis of Udayagiri Parish in Thalassery and Sister Preethy Mary of Elavoor Parish in Angamaly, members of the Assisi Sisters of Mary Immaculate (ASMI), a congregation under the Syro-Malabar Church based in Cherthala, Alappuzha, were taken into custody from Durg railway station.

The nuns, working at Fathima Hospital in Agra, were accompanying three young girls, allegedly 'recruited' for domestic work. One of the girls' brothers was also travelling with the girls. The situation worsened when one of the girls reportedly told police that she was taken without her consent. Additionally, the girls were not carrying Aadhaar cards, which further raised suspicion.
