Kerala group moves SC against bill on Muslim properties

The Sree Narayana Manava Dharmam Trust (SNMD) has sought intervention in a series of petitions challenging a controversial bill governing Muslim properties.

Eminent lawyer Dr Mohan Gopal appeared for the Trust, which argued that the contested Amendment Act constitutes a “fraud on the Constitution.”

Several opposition political parties and individuals have approached the apex court to question the constitutionality of the legislation passed by the Parliament last month.

On Monday, outgoing Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna listed the hearing of these petitions by a bench led by his successor, BR Gavai, for next week.

Sree Narayana Guru, a pivotal figure during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, was crucial in combating deep-rooted caste hierarchies in Kerala.
