Can you claim damages if a job offer is cancelled before joining?

I signed an employment contract with a company abroad after clearing several interviews that lasted for nearly a year. Two months ago, they asked me to resign from my previous job in order to join them. However

the company terminated my contract a week ago on the grounds that it was conditional on obtaining approvals from authorities, which they couldn't. Am I eligible for compensation as a result of their terminating the employment contract?
