Thermal power’s share may slip below 70% next fiscal

FOR THE FIRST time, thermal power’s share in India’s electricity generation is expected to fall below 70% in the next fiscal,as a combination of slower power demand growth and a sharp acceleration in renewable energy generation reshapes the country’s power mix, according toa Crisil Ratings report.

This shift is significant because, even though installed power capacity is now almost evenly split between thermal and green energy sources, the intermittent nature of renewable energy and persistent grid connectivity challenges have remained vexing constraints.
