US presses for ceasefire in Gaza as hopes rise of deal at Paris peace talks
February 23, 2024
|Evening Standard
THE United States pushed efforts to secure a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas ahead of a peace summit expected this weekend in Paris.
The head of the Mossad intelligence service was reportedly set to lead Israel’s delegation to the summit, where mediators from the US, Egypt and Qatar are readying new proposals in the hope of averting a threatened ground offensive in Gaza by Israel on the teeming city of Rafah. Defence minister Yoav Gallant, a member of prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s three-man war cabinet, indicated some flexibility by saying: “We will expand the authority given to our hostage negotiators.”

The barbarism of the Iranian regime is plain — the West must not look away
After relatively little in the news about the massacre of civilians inside Iran this month, the world is finally beginning to catch up on the horrors unfolding. Protests against the economic situation quickly turned to calls to bring down the government and grew to 186 towns and cities across Iran. In a television address on January 9, an order came from the Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei to security forces to suppress the protests “by any means necessary... shoot to kill and show no mercy”.
