Complaints about new drive flood social media
January 23, 2026
|Dumfries and Galloway Standard
Dumfries and Galloway Council is facing a backlash of social media posts to its new campaign which encourages families, young professionals and remote workers to move to the region.
Hundreds of people responded within hours of it being launched on the council's Facebook page on Wednesday - despite the local authority explaining that “like many rural areas, our population is falling and ageing and we want to protect local schools, services and community life for the future”.
Supported by the Scottish Government's Addressing Depopulation Fund, the campaign - which can be viewed at https://orlo.uk/FCvvA - showcases “everything that makes Dumfries and Galloway special: strong communities, beautiful surroundings, space to grow and great connections to major cities.”
And councillor Stephen Thompson shares the region’s many positive points in a video.
