SPACES ARE IN DEMAND BECAUSE OF ROAD'S PROXIMITY TO ROYAL DERBY HOSPITAL AND LOCAL PRIMARY SCHOOL

Street where motorists regularly ask to park on its residents' driveways

RESIDENTS in a Derby street are being consistently asked if people can pay to park on their driveways and some have turned it into a regular side hustle.

Jackson Avenue sits directly across from Royal Derby Hospital and is also home to Wren Park Primary School.

This has created an immense demand for parking from residents, hospital staff and visitors, and primary school parents.

Many residents say said they frequently have notes posted through their letterboxes asking if their private driveway can be used for parking for a small fee.

A number of residents have turned this into a regular ad-hoc deal and some advertise this business online on platforms such as JustPark and Your Parking Space.

JustPark shows 14 homes within a “10-minute” walking distance of the hospital are renting out their private driveways for between £6 and £17 for a full working day (9am-5pm), with 54 in the overall area around the city’s main health hub, with Your Parking Space showing 10 such available spots close to the Royal Derby.

Jackson Avenue residents say numerous homeowners have paved over their front gardens, knocked down boundary walls and installed dropped kerbs in order to give themselves a larger platform on which to rent out parking spaces for hospital staff and visitors.
