THE Ashbourne Photographic Society - no longer known by this name, but the beginnings of the present day Ashbourne and District Camera Club began 120 years ago in October 1905 according to the Ashbourne News of the day, on October 20, 1905.

In Derbyshire there were 493 businesses as photographic studios and associated trades. Ashbourne was the base of seven studios in the 1891 census. They were run by Robert Bull (senior) and Robert Bull (junior), Hans Peter Hansen, John Lovell Hart, Henry Hinge, Frank Simpson and Louis Boswell Twells. The businesses were found in town at the railway station, Market Place, Church Street and Sturston Road. These businesses did move around but were still found in premises in these streets.
