Robust checks carried out at city bars to help people in 'uncomfortable situations'

"ROBUST" checks and tests have been carried out at Derby bars to ensure staff can help people in "uncomfortable situations".

Derbyshire police chief superintendent Emma Aldred told a Derby City Council meeting rigorous checks have been made to ensure bar staff know what to do when someone "asks for Angela".

The senior police officer's reassurance on nighttime safety comes as university students return to Derby (and other towns), visiting venues across the city.

The national scheme, which started in 2016, helps anyone who is feeling vulnerable on a night out get urgent support.

Bar staff will be ready to call a taxi or help people get out of a situation safely without the instigator’s knowledge.
