More police and resources were promised...daylight robbery proves otherwise
July 16, 2025
|Derby Telegraph
I AM struggling to put into words - never good for a journalist - how disappointed and upset I am at this moment in time.
It's the latest incident in St Peter's Street, in which three hoodlums had the barefaced (and hooded) cheek to smash the front windows of a pawn shop and grab some of the displayed contents.
For more than 12 months. I have written a large number of stories about St Peter's Street and its decline from a bustling shopping area to what is now a “no-go” area for many people, especially as there is a continual cavalcade of delivery people's bikes up and down, people swigging alcohol at all times of day, occupying seats, and all despite a public space protection order being in place.
But there is not much point in the order being in place because there never seems to be anyone around to enforce the rules - and someone actually has to be upset by the drinking or the cycling and have the nerve to complain in order for something to happen.
Judging by the video that was released of Monday's daylight robbery, no one was in any hurry to stop the robbers - and you probably couldn't blame them, bearing in mind the force they were bringing to bear on the shop front, but neither was any law enforcement person around at all.
They were allowed to complete their task and run off.
