'Game-changing' demolition starts for major project

DEMOLITION work has started and roads are closed in Derby city centre as part of a £38million “game-changing” project for the city.

- By NIGEL SLATER

Workers are out in force at Peat House in Stuart Street, which is soon to be bulldozed as part of huge efforts to improve the city's flood defences.

‘Derby Riverside’ is the second phase of Derby City Council's £95million Our City Our River (OCOR) scheme.

The aim of the whole project is to save Derby from further flooding devastation, as was seen during Storm Babet in 2023, by increasing defences across the city.

Specifically, the second phase will see the construction of a new flood wall, floodgates, and a riverside green area in the city centre to provide a controlled corridor for flood waters to pass through.
