Far from the battlefield, pair who fought in American Civil War finally get headstones

A RARE and unusual event took place over the weekend as two military headstones were unveiled to honour two survivors of the American Civil War here in Derby - one of which was the last remaining veteran who served in the conflict.

He died in 1940, 75 years after the conflict ended - but Samuel Lander Hough (2nd New Jersey Cavalry) wasn't buried in the USA when he died.

He was laid to rest in his home town of Derby which he left originally at the age of two with his parents.

He returned some time later to live out the rest of his life in the city.

The other Civil War veteran was Henry Nathaniel McGuiness (65th New York Infantry), originally from London, who also spent the rest of his life in Derby.

He died in 1916 aged 76.
