CHILDREN, pensioners, servicemen and women and dignitaries from across Derbyshire gathered to pay their respects during a Remembrance Day service.

Duke of Devonshire joins school for ‘meaningful' remembrance ceremony

The ceremony, held in the grounds of the Royal School for the Deaf Derby, was led by head teacher Paul Burrows and included prayers from the Very Rev Dr Peter Robinson, Dean of Derby and an exhortation from Ian Allen of the Royal British Legion, with the whole service interpreted into British Sign Language (BSL) for pupils, staff and guests.

A two-minute silence was observed before pupils Mario and Lilly signed an extract from "Private Peaceful" by Michael Morpurgo.

Pupils also laid handmade wreaths and placed crosses and faith symbols at the foot of a flagpole as part of the ceremony which featured a Scottish piper playing throughout.
