Council tax cut to help those in hardship is the right thing to do

ALLOWING Derby residents in hardship up to 80 per cent off their yearly council tax bill is the "right thing to do", the council leader has said.

The council's Labour administration is adjusting the authority's council tax support scheme for the first time in 12 years to offer households more financial support.

Currently those granted support via the scheme must pay at least 30 per cent of their annual bill.

But changes to the scheme could see households which are granted support-pay as little as 20 per cent towards their yearly council tax bill.

The 20 per cent minimum contribution may apply to households living in band A or band B properties.

Previously, the 30 per cent cap was for those in band A properties alone.
