COUNCIL INSISTS LATEST PHASE OF ROADWORKS WILL BENEFIT ROAD USERS IN LONG TERM, DESPITE INCONVENIENCE

- By OSCAR FISHER

DERBY residents in a busy corner of the city have once again found themselves among roadworks, just weeks after the completion of a 17-week project.

The A6 Duffield Road and King Street, near the Five Lamps junction, will be subject to a further 22 weeks of roadworks and highway improvements until June.

While Derby City Council says that “most” of the works will be carried out between 9.30am and 3pm, the upcoming restrictions have come as a surprise to locals, with some saying they “thought it was all over.”

Starting on Monday, the first eight weeks will see the closure of the bus lanes on Kings Street, northbound and southbound, which are already in place.

This will then be followed by the closure of Lodge Lane, between Duffield Road and Garden Street, from February to June.

The Lodge Lane closure, a one-way street which connects Bridge Street to Five Lamps, is to allow the construction of a new right-turn-only lane, easing congestion on the southbound leg of the A6.

The council said that the roadworks will allow the “resurfacing and decluttering” of redundant street furniture to “avoid further disruption to road users in the future”.

The council added: “These enhancements are a natural progression from the successful upgrades at the Five Lamps junction on Kedleston and Duffield Roads.

"Both phases form part of a wider scheme, funded by the Bus Service Improvement Plan, to maximise benefits to road users in Darley ward.”
