REMEMBER all the fuss when the FA appointed a foreign manager of the England men’s team?

That vilified honour belonged to Sven Goran Eriksson back in 2000.

Some critics couldn't contain themselves.

The decision was greeted with utter derision in some quarters. It was treated like an act of footballing treason.

It took place in this century, too, but felt like an attitude from Dickensian times.

And the pile-on was just as fierce less than 12 months ago when Gareth Southgate was replaced by Thomas Tuchel.

A German, for goodness’ sake.

Perhaps women’s football doesn’t matter as much as the men’s game.

Perhaps it is still treated with a little contempt from those who believe it is like a second-class sport compared to the one Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo have ruled these past two decades.
