Wane sad Mel will miss Ashes clashes
ENGLAND boss Shaun Wane is “gut- ted” not to be facing Mal Meninga in the Ashes - but fully understands why the Australia boss has stood down.
As the national side prepares for the eagerly-awaited three-Test series against the world champions this autumn, long-serving Kangaroos boss Meninga’s recent decision to quit has surprised many.
The legendary former Queensland and Australia centre, a rugby league ‘Immortal, had to give up his role having agreed to become the head coach of the NRL’s newest franchise Perth Bears.
They don't enter the competition until 2027, but Meninga, 64, starts his three-year contract with them on July 1.
That means the Kangaroos are on the lookout for a new coach ahead of an historic first Ashes tour to the UK since 2003.
Wane, who has still yet to face Australia, despite taking over England in 2020, said: "I've a lot of time for Mal as he’s a big advocate of the international game.
