WHAT'S that haunting noise - known as a "skirl" - drifting over the glens? Why, it's International Bagpipe Day - an annual celebration of the soothing Scottish instrument, often seen carried by large men in kilts.

But how much do you know about the ancient battle pipes? MEG JORSH softens the blow with some tartan-tastic facts...

LIKE AN EGYPTIAN: Believe it or not, bagpipes didn't come from Scotland. The earliest versions were played in ancient Egypt, as early as 400BC. The so-called "pipers of Thebes" were said to play instruments with pipes made from dog skin and bones.
