Cav on his Merckx to be greatest stage winner

SIR MARK CAVENDISH will take aim at immortality on his Tour de France encore in Florence today – on a mission to prove you’re never too old for fairytales.

At 39, the Manx missile has high hopes of crossing the line first for the 35th time, which would take him clear of Belgian legend Eddy Merckx (inset) as the Tour’s greatest-ever stage winner.

And if the first-ever knight of the peloton tastes glory in the 111th edition of the world’s greatest bike race, he will be untouchable as Britain’s greatest cyclist.
