FOOTBALL legend Duncan Ferguson has told how thugs in prison threatened to maim and kill him on “the longest night of my life”.

The former Everton star was locked up in Glasgow's notorious Barlinnie prison after a bust-up during a match for Rangers.

Reliving his ordeal, Big Dunc said: “I'm a brave man, tough physically and mentally, but my blood ran cold.

“Outside, I was Big Dunc. Striker. Everton and Scotland targetman. Inside, I was the target. And I was terrified.”

Ferguson was sentenced to three months behind bars for headbutting Raith Rovers' John McStay at Ibrox Park in April 1994.

He was jailed the following year after losing an appeal against the sentence.

Ferguson said: “As I entered the prison, I thought, ‘What is happening to me? What's happening to my life? How has it come to this?'

“I sat for several hours on a bench, surrounded by men with ‘Mars bars’ - scars. Everywhere I looked I sensed menace.”

He added: “Everyone in Barlinnie knew I was coming.
