- JAMES MOORE

The much-loved umpire was one of the biggest characters of the game, with tributes pouring in for the fun-loving Yorkshireman who oversaw 66 Tests and 69 one-day internationals.

But he’s not the only official who has lit up the sport, as JAMES MOORE reveals in his quirky history of those men in white coats...

WICKET EFFORT: Ex-bowler Frank Chester had his right arm amputated after being injured while serving in World War One.

The Brit switched to umpiring after the conflict, giving batsmen out by raising his artificial limb, complete with a black leather glove. He went on to officiate at 48 Test matches.
