DOGS are more than just pets. They are part of the family - with some owners even calling them “fur babies”. And just like kids, our wilful pups don't always do what we want them to. That's where pooch parenting comes into play. In new book Dog Parenting, canine behaviour experts Amy Pike, Elizabeth Mullen and Tara Murtagh share how to understand, train and bond with your best friend. Here Star Paws columnist CATHERINE LAMB reveals some of their most helpful tips and training techniques...

IT may feel natural to tell your dog off when you see an unwanted behaviour, but this can leave them feeling confused and frustrated. Instead, the experts say you should use the word “yes” to let them know when they're doing the right thing. Here's how to teach them the meaning of “yes”..

• Happily yet calmly, say “YES!” when your dog is sitting or standing.

• Pause for a second.

• Grab a treat and lower it to your dog's mouth.

• Repeat the sequence a few times.

When your pooch understands the action you're rewarding, they will repeat it. You can then use the word “yes” to teach them all manner of things, including tricks, behaviours and tasks.
