Heatwave comes to a thundering halt

THUNDERSTORMS and downpours battered parts of Britain last night, bringing an end to the blistering heatwave.

Temperatures climbed to around 30C before the storms struck with northern England and Scotland bearing the brunt of the wet weather.

It is expected to be cooler but still warm today before a return to scorching conditions tomorrow.
