SUMMER is finally here - but did you know that the sunny season can have all sorts of weird and wonderful effects on your body? Boffins have recently found evidence that we get drunker during summer than winter, for example. Here JAMES MOORE reveals some other surprising ways the next few months could impact your health...

HEADY DAYS: Ahhh, there's nothing quite like a cold pint of lager or glass of wine in the sunshine. But do you suffer more from over-indulging at this time of year? Boozing in summer is more likely to make you drunk and lead to that inevitable hangover, according to scientists at Nagoya University in Japan. The researchers are not sure exactly why this happens, but it may be down to how our bodies process food and drink for energy during different seasons. They say it may explain why the number of patients hospitalised for acute alcohol intoxication tends to be higher in the summer months.

that if you do have a heart attack in the summer, you're 19% more likely to survive it.

WEIGHT TO GO: Our diets tend to be better in the summer, despite those calorie-laden barbecues. We eat more vitamin-rich berries and consume fewer calories to beat the cold compared to winter. Our appetites reduce, with a US study finding we typically eat 200 fewer calories a day. Combined with the fact that we normally do more exercise, according to a study by the University of North Carolina, it could be a good time to slim down.
