SUN-seeking punters turned Benidorm into Cheltenham-on-Sea this week, as the Daily Star revealed.

The resort has been flooded with Brits queuing up to have a flutter in the Spanish sunshine.

But how much do you really know about the destination - said to be cheaper than Chelts for a week “at the races”?

Here MEG JORSH gives you the facts...

SAILAWAY SUCCESS

It's been a holiday hotspot for more than 100 years. The first hotel - the Hotel Bilbaíno - was opened by sailor Pedro Cortés in 1920, followed by the Hotel Marconi in 1934. But things really got going in the 1950s, when the decline of the local fishing industry meant businesses focused on tourism.

It was the first Spanish city to let women wear bikinis on the beach.

The cheeky bathing suits were banned until Benidorm mayor Pedro Zaragoza Orts decided they would help attract tourists in 1953.
