TIME TO MOVE ON UP
February 11, 2024
|Daily Star Sunday
FEW clubs like to live in the past more than Manchester United.
But that’s understandable considering the fallen giants haven’t won the league title in more than a decade.
The last time United conquered Europe, Andy Murray hadn’t won Wimbledon, Barack Obama hadn’t been voted in as US President and Jude Bellingham was looking forward to his fifth birthday.
There’s nothing wrong with looking back on former glories, of course. Histories like United’s are there for them to be proud of – and should be celebrated.
But as the clock ticks, those memories of former successes are becoming more and more important to those associated with the club, because there is little from the modern era to draw upon. This all might explain why a lot of people who love United consider the prospect of them leaving Old Trafford for a new stadium akin to someone defacing the statue of Sir Alex Ferguson.
An act of treason, if you like.
