The Carry On Sergeant star and ex-jockey's apprentice became the first Doctor. Bad health meant he often forgot his lines. He gave his wife Heather a solid gold TARDIS on a chain.

By the time he played the second Doctor the star was leading a double life, with two separate families and six children. His own mum didn't know.
