Runner and skier could not get op as unit was closed

- BY ELIZABETH HUNTER

A MAN who had a stroke says he has been left immobile after he failed to get the right treatment because it happened outside hospital “office hours”.

Graham McGowan, 53, of Aboyne, Aberdeenshire, was taken to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary where a blood clot was detected.

Doctors advised he should be treated with a thrombectomy - a procedure to remove blood clots in a large artery.

However, he was told he could not get the procedure as he arrived at hospital outside ‘office hours’ at 9pm.

The closest specialist thrombectomy hub to ARI is in Ninewells Hospital in Dundee and only offers the procedure from 9am-7pm, Monday to Friday.
