AROUND this time of year the hatcheries for Clyde in the Classroom project have sprung into life again.
Across the Clyde catchment, schoolchildren have been watching trays of brown trout eggs, checking temperatures and making sure the water flowing through tanks stays cool, clean and well oxygenated. It's the sort of hands-on science lesson that sticks with you long after the bell rings.
Run by the Clyde River Foundation, the programme has introduced tens of thousands of pupils to the life cycle of native fish and the fragile ecosystems that support them.
Many anglers will have seen the hatcheries at shows but for the pupils involved the experience is more personal.
They become custodians, responsible for keeping those tiny fish alive before releasing them into tributaries that eventually feed the River Clyde.
