Rohl's boys bash their head on an open door as McInnes bids to do a Leicester

- Keith Jackson

POINTS will be dropped by the three main protagonists before this race has run.

That much seems glaringly obvious.

For that reason, Rangers may have left Easter Road yesterday afternoon wondering what all the fuss was about.

And that's probably why Danny Rohl and his side will most likely come up short when the final analysis is being done on this epic three-way fight for Scotland's Premiership title.

Because, having finally manoeuvred themselves into second position and above Celtic in the table for the first time in God only knows, they rolled into the capital yesterday apparently oblivious to the need for them to get back out of town with all three points.

And it's precisely this lack of ring craft, ruthlessness and know-how which has been their undoing over all these years spent playing second fiddle to the neighbours. When presented with an open door they have made a habit of tripping over their own two feet at the crucial moment and falling flat on their collective face.

That's why a large number of their own fans have been reluctant to place their faith and belief in these players even despite their rise up through the standings and into the very thick of the argument for domestic supremacy.

They've had to sit through this same movie over and over and it will come as no surprise at all to them that today is officially Groundhog Day in the States, where American owner Andrew Cavenagh is most probably tearing out his hair.

Cavenagh has been throwing the kitchen sink at making Rangers competitive again but now has less than 24 hours to secure the kind of quality - and proven winners - which will be required to snatch the title at the first attempt.

He must have been watching on in a state of considerable confusion yesterday at the halfhearted manner in which Rohl's side went about its business right from the start of a long afternoon in Leith.
