She tells court of drunken accusations

- BY MICHAEL MCQUAID

A TOP Scots police officer has been cleared of attacking his wife in their home after she told a court she made up the claims while drunk.

Chief superintendent Pat Campbell was also accused of threatening to commit suicide following the incident in Plains, Lanarkshire, and demanding spouse Leonne withdraw an allegation she made about him to cops.

But Campbell, 54, who led the probe into the death in police custody of Sheku Bayoh last year, walked free yesterday after Sheriff Joseph Hughes found both charges not proven.

The sheriff said: "I have reasonable doubt as to whether these incidents took place. The benefit of such doubt should and must be given to the accused person regardless of who they are."
