Wales team has heart but there is no hiding how far they've fallen

AFTER 10 bruising defeats on the bounce, Wales finally halted their slide - and did so with a resilience that belies the bleak headlines certain to follow.

- By STEFFAN THOMAS

This was a side that refused to fold, clawing victory from the very edge of another dispiriting loss.

Wales looked certain to slip to another embarrassing defeat against Eddie Jones' side but there was a tenacity about this group, who refused to throw in the towel.

Make no bones about it, this was not a great performance.

In fact it was awful at times.

But to come back from the dead with an attacking set that began in their own 22 takes a lot of character and speaks a lot to the culture Tandy is looking to build in this side.

They aren’t the biggest or the most talented side in the world but the never-say-die attitude was a big positive.

And what a kick by replacement outside-half Jarrod Evans under enormous pressure to seal a 24-23 victory for Wales.

The wild celebrations at the end told its own story and it signified relief as much as anything.

This is a Wales side who had forgotten what it felt like to win at home in the Principality Stadium and it was also a side short of confidence.

Above all else, the important thing is Wales have got another victory in the bag and it is something to build on.
