VOLUNTEERS WANTED TO ENTER TUNNEL 'LOST' FOR DECADES

VOLUNTEERS are wanted to enter a tunnel that was left unused for decades.

Berwyn Tunnel was built between 1864 and 1865 as part of the Llangollen and Corwen Railway under the direction of engineer Henry Robertson.

The curving tunnel - between Berwyn and Deeside Halt - took a year to complete and is 689 yards long. But passenger services on the line ended in 1964 and railway tracks in the tunnel were later removed.

Llangollen Heritage Railway started up in the 1970s and, over the decades, the line was gradually extended east - reaching Deeside Halt through the reopened Berwyn Tunnel in the 1990s.

Volunteers are now wanted to get trapped on a train in the tunnel in a rescue operation that will see them walked out by railway staff and emergency services.
