'A DEEPLY RESPECTED & TRULY SPECIAL MAN'

Tributes to local history expert Gareth

TRIBUTES have been paid to a “man of the people” who brought Welsh history to life for all generations.

Gareth Roberts, from Deiniolen, was passionate about the history of the local area, believing “everywhere has something interesting about it”.

He created an archive of the names of Dinorwig Quarry subjects, stories about local characters and culture and a series of walking maps that traced the history of the area and promoted place names.

He was admitted into the Gorsedd of the Bards at the National Eisteddfod in Boduan in 2023 in recognition of the work he had done.

Sadly his family announced he had suffered a medical emergency while out walking last Thursday.

He was given CPR by members of the public before treatment from paramedics and the attendance of the Wales Air Ambulance.

He was taken to Ysbyty Gwynedd in Bangor but died on Friday. Gareth was 62. He leaves his wife of 25 years, Melanie Roberts, and son Gwyn.
