Businesses in Wales backed for expansion

WELSH football club Haverfordwest County AFC is on the market and is seeking backers to take it to the next level.

The Bluebirds play in the JD Cymru Premier league and have qualified for Europe twice in three years.

The Pembrokeshire club says it is looking for new owners - or co-investors - to realise its goal of funding a professional team, invest in its youth development and ultimately win the Cymru Premier league.

The club was acquired by chairman Rob Edwards after he stumbled across a listing during the pandemic. The club sits under parent company Morley Sports Management, run by Mr Edwards, whose other interests include US wrestling brand Ohio Valley Wrestling.

Mr Edwards said: "We took over a well-run club with a strong foundation and lots of potential, but found new ways to build the academy.

"But having seen so much success in terms of attendances and results in such a short period of time, we have a huge amount of belief in where we can get to. That's why we're looking for the right partners."

The club is inviting expressions of interest. There is no indicative price tag and new owners will need to invest to move the club towards a hybrid or full-time model.

A new 3G pitch was installed at the stadium last year with plans for a new stand under way.

There are two current charges against the club - a loan via Mr Edwards' other business Wine & Earth, for the remaining pitch costs which will be cleared by the end of November, and an advance rental arrangement with Pembrokeshire College, which controls the sinking fund.

Haverfordwest finished third in the JD Cymru Premier last season, securing European qualification. While routinely just 100 people would turn out for games at Ogi Bridge Meadow, under Mr Edwards' chairmanship attendances have skyrocketed, with 1,700 fans turning out for last year's playoff final.
