PHASED APPROACH 'LEAVING WELSH MARKETS AT A DISADVANTAGE'

THE Welsh Government's phased approach to easing Bluetongue restrictions is leaving Welsh livestock markets at a competitive disadvantage, according to Samuel Kurtz MS, Welsh Conservative Shadow Minister for Rural Affairs.
He says that while the recent announcement from the Deputy First Minister and Cabinet Secretary for Rural Affairs offers limited progress, the Welsh Government's decision to delay allowing domestic Welsh livestock markets to host key breeding sales risks causing serious disruption to an already time-sensitive trading period.
Two changes were confirmed in a letter to stakeholders on Monday, August 4:
■From Monday, August 18, vaccinated Welsh livestock may be traded at Wales-only designated sales in English markets within 20km of the border, without requiring pre-movement testing, provided movements comply with same-day general licence conditions.
