BIG TURNOUT FOR WALES' MOST NORTHERN EVENT TO MARK VE DAY

- By DALE SPRIDGEON Local Democracy Reporter

Beacon for the brave

ANGLESEY hosted a rousing VE Day remembrance event which saw the most northern beacon lighting in Wales.

More than 500 people braved the chill evening air to gather in a car park, in the shadow of Parys Mountain, near Amlwch, as the sun set over the Irish Sea, on Thursday.

A special programme of events included music, hymns, prayers, a parade by members of the armed services, speeches and the lighting of the beacon at 9.30pm - just one of many across the country.

The event saw representatives from all branches of the forces attend, including a large number of cadets and also other groups, such as the Scouts.

Among the throngs were a number of VIP guests including local politicians, council and community leaders.

Several members of the public had dressed in costumes of the Second World War era, and there were vintage cars and army Jeeps of yesteryear, as well as the flags of all nations.
