WORKERS defied challenging conditions to upgrade an historic railway tunnel showing signs of age.
Staff, volunteers and contractors raced against time to renew the track in Berwyn Tunnel before heritage trains start running again this weekend.
They worked through January's rain at one of the most technically difficult locations on the Llangollen and Corwen Railway.
Grappling with temperatures colder inside than out, the engineering teams laid track in a tunnel that curves for almost two-thirds of a kilometre beneath the lower slopes of Pen-y-Vivod hill in Denbighshire.
Engineering manager Tim Pulford said it had been a demanding project.
