80mph Floris sparks train, ferry and flight cancellations and cars hit by falling trees

- BY HOLLIE BONE

Stormy Monday

STORM Floris battered Britain with 80mph gales and downpours yesterday, as thousands of flights, ferries and trains were cancelled.

The Met Office issued a yellow weather warning for parts of northern England, Wales and Northern Ireland until 6am this morning.

Scotland had an amber alert after forecasters issued a “danger to life” warning amid fears of flying debris.

Fallen trees flattened cars in Gateshead and blocked rail lines in Scotland, where 43,000 homes were also left without power.

In Liverpool, a gazebo was lifted from a train track that had caused temporary delays to Merseyrail lines after blowing out of a nearby garden.

Another 7,000 were hit with power outages across Ireland and one elderly resident was left shaken when a tree fell through the roof of her house in North Belfast.

Train services north of Preston and Newcastle were stopped while routes across Yorkshire, Lancashire and Cumbria faced major delays.
