Police to be given more authority to stop demos

THE police will be granted new powers to stop campaigners repeatedly holding protests at the same site and arrest those who breach the conditions.

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood announced the clampdown after almost 500 people were arrested at a pro-Palestine march led by the Defend Our Juries group in London.

She said: "The right to protest is a fundamental freedom in our country.
