50 miles of Normandy coastline is named a World Heritage site
A MONUMENT listing the names of 22,540 soldiers killed during the D-Day invasion is set to receive World Heritage status.
Some 50 miles of Normandy coastline, including the beaches stormed by Allied forces on June 6, 1944, will join some of the world's most treasured historic sites.
The protected area includes The British Normandy Memorial in Ver-sur-Mer - 160 limestone columns bearing the names of servicemen and women who lost their lives.
The site overlooking Gold Beach was selected by British Second World War veterans as a fitting place to remember those who fell during the bloody fight to liberate Nazi-occupied Europe.
