BIN strikes could spread across the country as cash-strapped councils cut services, a union chief warned.

Clare Keogh, national officer for local government at Unite, said members were incensed by how a dispute in Birmingham had been managed.

Around 400 employees at the city council have been on an all-out strike for over a month, leading to 17,000 tons of waste piling up on the streets.

With Birmingham set to be warmer than Barcelona this weekend, residents fear the conditions will get even worse and that the rat population will grow even faster.
