For all his brilliance, Robin Smith probably never produced a truly defining moment for his adopted country but he remains a defining image of his era.

And that is a truly great sporting legacy to leave.

That image is of a player going toe-to-toe with some of the most hostile fast bowlers the sport has even seen.

That image is of a player apparently seeing protective equipment as a sign of weakness and standing tall against fearsome quicks.
