SOUTH WEST MONSOON TO POUR IN VIOLENT TORRENTS IN WESTERN PROVINCE

The Western Province is slated to be battered more by the south-west monsoon, with rainfall above normal this time, a climatologist said yesterday.

The monsoon is getting activated these days and will last till September.

Climatologist Malith Fernando told Daily Mirror that the Western Province would receive more rainfall than normal this year.

Mr. Fernando, who is from the Department of Meteorology, said strong winds are caused due to a low-pressure area formed at the Bay of Bengal.

Heavy rains and strong winds in the current monsoon have affected thousands of people and caused the death of an individual as well. The Western Province is affected the most during the current monsoon and is experiencing above normal rainfall, an official said.
