Zelensky: We are ready to talk to Russia

HOPES of a breakthrough to end the three-year war in Ukraine rose last night as Russian president Vladimir Putin considered an offer to begin peace talks this week.

Moscow could meet its neighbour as early as Thursday as Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky said his besieged country is “ready to meet” Kremlin representatives after they had suggested negotiations in Istanbul.

Ukraine and European leaders want Putin to agree to a 30-day ceasefire ahead of discussions but the Russian despot has rejected these demands.

He claimed Russia was seeking “serious negotiations” aimed at “moving towards a lasting, strong peace”.

However, Donald Trump last night ordered Mr Zelensky to meet Putin “immediately”, posting on social media: “President Putin of Russia doesn’t want to have a Cease Fire Agreement with Ukraine, but wants to meet on Thursday, in Turkey, to negotiate a possible end to the BLOODBATH. Ukraine should agree to this, IMMEDIATELY. At least they will be able to determine whether or not a deal is possible, and if it is not, European leaders, and the U.S., will know where everything stands, and can proceed!
