Open champion had talent to also excel as a footballer
NEW Open champion Xander Schauffele had the talent to "save" the USA football team, his father has claimed.
The Californian has won two Majors in just over two months and will now seek to defend his Olympic golf title.
And the new world No.2's family has a rich European sporting heritage with two of his great-grandfathers playing professional football.
Johann Hoffmann played for Austria and won the league title for clubs in his homeland as well as Czechoslovakia and France.
Richard Schauffele, who was 6ft 8in, played for Stuttgart before turning to athletics.
So Schauffele has inherited some terrific footballing genes - and could have helped the USA during their recent Copa America shambles, when they exited early on.
